My family had a Father’s Day get-together on Sunday, at my aunt and uncle’s farm (that’s a bit deceptive; it hasn’t really been a farm in recent years, but it’s been in the family for generations and we still call it a farm). It was an amazingly peaceful, relaxing, pleasant day, in spite of a ridiculously adorable, incredibly hyperactive puppy and a small dose of friendly family violence (mostly against yours truly, courtesy my nephew and youngest niece).

Throughout it all, I chatted with the four fathers present –my dad, my grandpa, my uncle, and my brother-in-law– and asked them what words of wisdom, what fatherly advice, they had to bestow on the world this fine Father’s Day.
