Hello, Earthlings! You’re watching Adam the Alien.
Today is day sixteen, I believe, of Vlog Every Day April, and today as we listen to the rain fall on the shop roof, I’m gonna talk about a problem I have. And that is a problem in creating.
Wanna know what the problem is? It’s that I have
TOO! FRICKIN’! MANY! IDEAS!
So today, I gave myself plenty of time to make a video. And obviously, from the darkness and the fact that I’m filming this in the shop, you can tell that I..I…I ran out of time. I ran out of time. And I did it to myself.
I couldn’t decide which of the many things that were occurring to me to actually make. And so I started looking at, like, “Well which one will be easier? And I’ll save the other ones for later, and…”
And I just got caught up in finding so many pieces for so many bigger ideas, and bigger projects, that I completely lost track of actually getting a video done for today!
Now don’t get me wrong, I am super glad that I have a lot of ideas, all the time, about everything. Most of which will never happen, because I have more ideas than it is possible for a human to make a reality in their lifetime.
And I certainly know friends who complain that they only have their ONE idea. Which, by the way: I don’t think that’s true. I just think that that’s the idea you’re in love with. And there’s nothing wrong with that!
But having so many ideas can be really, really frustrating when you also have a brain that is a little too ruled by ADHD.
Having a lack of executive function and not being able to focus on this over that without EXTREME effort makes it so frustrating.
If you’ve ever read the Awkward Yeti comic that gets shared around on…on social media,
the character of the heart in that comic is very much my attention span.
Which is to say that my attention span is always going,
“WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!”
And now I’m dizzy. Whee!
This is one of the reasons that I really like collaborating with others and working on a team. Because it helps supply a focus that I don’t otherwise have.
Plus, of course, then…when minds are working on something together, you can really create something, I think, better than any one of you could have done alone. But that’s a separate issue.
The point is that one of the things that stops me from creating is that there’s too much that I want to create. And I admit, I don’t know how to solve this problem, other than continuing to work on skills and and methods of focusing on a few things instead of ALL the things going,
“WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!”
Dizzy again!
And I’m not making this video, really, to ask for advice. But it’s just something I was reflecting on.
And I guess I’m curious if this is a common issue. Because I most often hear people being down on themselves about how, “Oh, I don’t have any ideas. I’m not creative.”
And I think. personally. that that’s just people stifling themselves before they really give themselves a chance.
But I do wonder how many people out there have…have MY same problem of just too! Many! Ideas!
So I guess a question for the comments is: what stops you from creating? Do you have too many ideas and you’re not sure what to focus on? Do you have too few ideas? Do you…do you feel like you’re uncreative?
Or do you just have no interest? As a third category that I probably should have thought about earlier.
Though, honestly, I think EVERYONE wants to create in SOME way.
YOU CAN’T FOOL ME!
There IS a creative bone in your body, I know it!
This is going nowhere.
This is just going nowhere.
So! I guess with that, I’ll just have to say: I’ll see y’all tomorrow!
Until next time I’m Adam the Alien. Fare thee well!
End screen time!
In addition to going to AdamTheAlien.com, as usual, for other videos and non-video content as well, you can now check out my Patreon! Yes, I finally launched a Patreon. I’ve been dragging my feet on it for way too long. Everyone keeps telling me, “You need to do it! You need to do it!” Fine, I did it. There’s not a video up yet, it’s still very much a work in progress. But please check it out! Fare thee well!
